Italian Canadian Business and Community Leaders: Stand With Our Jewish Friends and Neighbours
Antisemitism has reached an alarming level in Canada.
Jewish Canadians are facing an extraordinary number of incidents of hate, intimidation and harassment, without the level of public outrage and decisive action the situation demands.
Italian Canadian business and community leaders have a responsibility to speak out—and to stand with our Jewish friends and neighbours.
Jewish and Italian Canadians have lived, worked and built this country alongside one another for generations. In Toronto, our communities shared neighbourhoods, schools, businesses and workplaces. The 1933 Christie Pits riot remains a stark reminder of what can happen when antisemitism is allowed to move from words into the streets.
In the decades that followed, Jewish and Italian Canadians helped transform Toronto and Canada together, building businesses, employing generations of newcomers and contributing to the institutions and communities we all rely on today.
Italian Canadians also know what it means to face discrimination because of who you are. Our own history reminds us what can happen when prejudice is allowed to take hold.
Antisemitism, racism and discrimination of any kind are not only assaults on those directly targeted. They are an assault on the Canadian values that have allowed all of our communities to thrive.
OUR ROADMAP FORWARD:
→ ZERO TOLERANCE FOR HATE.
Antisemitism must be named, condemned and met with quick and decisive action.
→ CONSISTENT ENFORCEMENT OF THE LAW.
Threats, intimidation, violence and harassment must be treated seriously, regardless of who is targeted.
→ LEADERSHIP FROM EVERY COMMUNITY.
When one community is targeted, others cannot remain silent.
